A fine and rare brass Holland Circle or ‘simple theodolite’.
Signed: Gebroeders Bayens, Delft.
The silvered engraved compass dial has a gilded centre rosette and a finely balanced compass needle with jewelled pivot. The spoked frame with well divided circle with four fixed sights, the rotating alidade with two sights. Complete with a brass ball-and-socket mount and the original oak octogonal box.
The instrument can aslo be used as a cross, or as circumferentor.
