A Chinese magnetic compass in cylindrical wooden box with lid. The lid is marked with three characters. The needle with pivot is placed in the white painted well and surmounted by a printed dial marked with 24 Chinese characters. Along the concentric circles the characters are from the ten Heavenly Stems, the twelve Eartly Branches and the 8 Tigrams, which are used by the ancient Chinese to measure time, date and direction.
