French cross staff. The upper part can be rotated relatively to the lower part by turning the screw. On the lower part is a silvered scale graduated to degrees and sub division. Both parts have sighting slits. The instrument has a magnetic compass at the top. The base carries a socket so that it may be fitted on a tripod stand. Signed on the scale:
